Tern Bicycles

Still Getting Stuff Done

Tern GSD

More about the GSD

Small bike with great potential

Tern HSD

More about the HSD

Tern GSD

Get Stuff Done - from this sentence, the three letters of this premium longtail from Tern are formed

A compact cargo bike for the big everyday

Taking two children to nursery, then shopping and still going to sports in the afternoon? This is exactly what the Tern GSD is built for.

Despite its large transport options, the GSD remains surprisingly compact. It is hardly longer than many normal bicycles, but offers enormous space at the back for children and luggage.

The stable luggage rack is an integral part of the frame and can be combined with a variety of Tern accessories. This allows the same bike to be transformed into a child carrier, shopping bike, or a true everyday vehicle, depending on your needs.

Two adults stand by a Tern GSD, on which two children are sitting in child seats.

Two children? No problem.

One of the great strengths of the GSD is child transport.

With the right equipment, you can transport up to two children on the rear. Depending on their age, child seats, seat cushions, clubhouse, captain's chair, and other components from the Tern Passenger System are used.

In bad weather, you can make your Tern rainproof with the clubhouse fort, so the children stay dry!

This allows the bike to grow with your family: from transporting small children in child seats to larger children in the clubhouse, and later to teenagers and adults who can sit directly on the captain's chair.

And when there are no children riding along, the same space becomes an impressively large loading area for shopping, bags, or other everyday items.

Carry a lot without riding a huge bike.

The current Tern GSD Gen 3 is designed for a permissible total weight of up to 210 kg . The rear luggage rack may be loaded with up to 100 kg .

The crucial thing, however, is not noticeable on the data sheet, but when riding.

Due to the small wheels, the weight lays comparatively low. This provides a controlled riding experience, especially with children or heavy luggage. At the same time, the bike remains short and agile enough for city traffic, bike paths, and tight parking spaces.

A bike for multiple riders

Even if parents are of different heights, not everyone needs to have their own cargo bike.

The adjustable handlebar and telescopic seat post allow the GSD to be quickly adjusted for different riders. For the current GSD Gen 3, Tern specifies a height range of about 150 to 200 cm . The GSD is designed for a rider weight of up to 130 kg.

This is particularly practical when multiple people share the family bike.

Bosch Cargo Line – support for full loads

For the current GSD, Tern relies on the Bosch Cargo Line motor with up to 85 Nm of torque. It is specifically designed to powerfully and controllably support a heavily loaded cargo bike.

This is particularly noticeable when starting, on inclines, and of course when children and luggage are riding in the back. Depending on the model, different sized batteries ensure sufficient range, but there is always the option to retrofit a second battery without installation effort.

Depending on the GSD model, different gears and features are available – from classic derailleur gears to particularly low-maintenance solutions with hub gears and belt drive.

And where to put the GSD?

Tern has thought about that too.

The GSD requires significantly less space than many classic long-john cargo bikes and can even be stored vertically.

Especially in the city, this can make a big difference – because the best cargo bike is of little use if it cannot be stored properly anywhere.

Who is the Tern GSD suitable for?

You should particularly consider the GSD if you:

  • regularly want to transport one to two children, often do a lot of shopping or carry other luggage,
  • want to use a bike as a real replacement for a car,
  • need a lot of transport capacity but do not want to ride a large long-john,
  • want to share the bike with several people,
  • or are looking for a cargo bike that can adapt to different life stages over many years.
  • In short:

If your everyday life requires a lot of transport, but you still want a compact and agile bike, the GSD is one of the most exciting concepts on the market.Take a look at the different models

The GSD is available in various versions - so it fits many needs and budgets.

Theme explanation

Learn how to quickly set up and use our services with our step-by-step introduction process.

The small cargo bike for everyday use

The Tern HSD follows the same basic idea as the GSD – just more compact.

It combines the riding characteristics of a comfortable e-bike with surprisingly high transport capacity. This makes it particularly interesting for people who do not necessarily need a large family cargo bike but still want to transport significantly more than on a regular bike.

A child, large shopping, or simply a lot of luggage

The current HSD's luggage rack is designed for up to 80 kg. Depending on the equipment, you can transport a child, an adult passenger, or extensive luggage on it. Tern specifies a permissible total weight of up to 190 kg for the current HSD generation.

This means the HSD is much closer to a cargo bike than to a normal trekking or city e-bike – without necessarily feeling like it when riding.

Ideal for smaller families

Do you have a child and want to take them to nursery, school or sports by bike?

Then the HSD might be just the right size.

With the appropriate passenger accessories, a safe and comfortable space for a passenger is created at the back. As your child grows, the equipment can be adjusted accordingly.

And as soon as no one is riding along, you can simply use the same rack for bags, crates of drinks or the weekend shopping.

Compact in traffic – and when parked

One of the greatest strengths of the HSD is its size.

Tern deliberately describes the HSD as a particularly compact cargo bike. It is even shorter than many classic bicycles, making it very easy to navigate through city traffic and narrow paths.

This is also noticeable at home.

Whether in a garage, bike cellar or flat: An HSD is much easier to store than many large cargo bikes. Like the GSD, it can also be stored vertically to save space.

Comfortable instead of cumbersome

The HSD is not just a smaller cargo bike.

Its geometry is designed to ride stably even when loaded while remaining agile. The current HSD uses Bosch drives; depending on the model, the motor, gears and other features vary.

Especially if you are used to a normal bike or e-bike, the HSD can feel very familiar.

Who is the Tern HSD suitable for?

The HSD is particularly exciting if you:

  • mostly want to transport a child, transportieren möchtest,
  • if you want to take a lot of luggage, but don't need a large cargo bike,
  • if you are looking for a compact bike for the city and everyday use,
  • if you have little space to park,
  • if you actually like a normal e-bike, but need significantly more transport options,
  • or if you are looking for a versatile bike for commuting, shopping, and family life.

In short: the HSD is ideal if you want as much utility as possible on as little bike as possible.

GSD or HSD – which Tern is right for you?

On paper, both bikes are similar. However, there is a pretty clear difference in everyday use.

Take the GSD, if transport is a central part of your everyday life – especially with two children or regularly a lot of luggage.

Check out the HSD, if you want it more compact and lighter, usually transport a passenger, and are looking for a bike that stays as close as possible to the riding feel of a normal e-bike.

And then there are of course the many details: gears, belt or chain, battery size, child seats, railings, bags, weather protection, and the question of how the bike rides for you personally.

That’s exactly why we believe: A Tern should not only be chosen based on technical specifications.
