Which cargo bike fits our family?
When choosing a cargo bike, these questions are particularly important:
- How many children will regularly ride along?
- How old and how tall are they?
- Do you also need space for shopping, bags or luggage?
- Do you mainly ride short urban trips or longer distances as well?
- Are there hills on your regular routes?
- Does the bike need to fit through narrow passages or into a courtyard?
- Should it remain flexible and practical even later, when the children are older?
Depending on your everyday life, very different concepts can make sense.
Long John: keep the children in view
With a classic Long John, the cargo box sits between the handlebars and the front wheel.
This setup is particularly popular with younger children: they sit protected in front of the rider and remain easy to keep an eye on while riding.
Depending on the model, the box can offer space for one or more children, weather protection and additional storage.
A particularly good fit if you:
- transport younger children,
- want a protected passenger area,
- need plenty of storage space,
- want to carry children and shopping at the same time.
Longtail: compact and flexible
With a longtail, children sit behind the rider on an extended rear rack.
These bikes often feel very similar to a conventional bicycle and take up comparatively little space.
With seat pads, rails, child seats, bags and footrests, the bike can be adapted to different stages of family life.
A particularly good fit if you:
- are looking for a compact family bike,
- want to carry older children,
- also use the bike frequently on your own,
- prefer a very bicycle-like riding experience.
Trike: plenty of space and a stable stand
Three-wheeled cargo bikes offer a lot of carrying space and remain upright when stationary.
That can make getting children in and out especially convenient. At the same time, the riding experience is noticeably different from that of a conventional bicycle.
That’s why we particularly recommend taking a thorough test ride.
Safety starts with the right bike
A good family cargo bike needs to offer more than enough seats.
Important factors include:
a safe and comfortable riding position,
- brakes that are easy to reach,
- a stable stand,
- suitable restraint systems,
- enough space for children and luggage,
- motor assistance that matches your routes and load,
- handling that feels comfortable for everyone who rides the bike.
That’s why our advice always looks at the whole system: bike, equipment, routes and everyday use.
A cargo bike that grows with your family
Children grow, and your needs change with them.
Nursery trips become school runs. Child seats become seat cushions. Later on, you may need to carry school bags, sports gear or friends.
A good family cargo bike should therefore not only work today, but remain flexible for many years.
Practical even in bad weather
If you use a cargo bike regularly for nursery, school and everyday appointments, you won’t only be riding in sunshine.
Many models offer rain covers, sun protection and other accessories that help keep children protected in changing weather.
Which solution makes the most sense depends on the bike and on how you actually use it in everyday life.
Test ride and compare
Cargo bikes differ far more from one another than you might expect from pictures or specification sheets.
Riding position, steering, box size, motor, centre of gravity and ease of access can all feel completely different.
If you’re still unsure which concept suits you best, we recommend our cargo bike consultation with test rides.
If you already have a specific model in mind, you can book a model-specific consultation with a test ride.
